Mattia Preti

Mattia Preti is a major figure of the Italian Baroque, a painter whose career links the Caravaggist workshops of Rome, the great religious painting boom of mid-century Naples, and the single most important decorative commission in Malta, the interior of St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta. For collectors, he represents a rare category: an Old Master with deep, ongoing museum demand (recent acquisitions by the National Gallery of Art and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts) and a fixed, non-growing body of work, since no new paintings are being made.

Mattia Preti was born on 24 February 1613 in Taverna, a town in Calabria, then part of the Kingdom of Naples. He had no formal art-school education in the modern sense. He trained with his older brother, the painter Gregorio Preti, after joining him in Rome, probably before 1630. Both brothers are sometimes said to have studied at the Accademia di San Luca, though major institutional sources treat this as unconfirmed rather than settled. An early apprenticeship with the Caravaggist painter Giovanni Battista Caracciolo appears in some secondary accounts, but is likewise treated by leading museums as uncertain. He supplemented his training by studying directly from the works of Raphael, Michelangelo, and Caravaggio, and later, during travels in northern Italy, the paintings of Veronese in Venice.

By the early 1640s Preti had returned to Rome, where he painted the apse frescoes at Sant'Andrea della Valle. He went on to become one of the principal painters active in Rome in the mid-seventeenth century, and by the late 1650s he was a leading painter in Naples. Around 1660 to 1661 he traveled to Malta, having already been received into the Order of St John, and he remained there for the rest of his life, earning the traditional epithet "Il Cavalier Calabrese." Between 1661 and 1669 he carried out the complete redecoration of the interior of St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, and he continued to paint for the Order and for parish churches across the island. Mattia Preti died in Valletta on 3 January 1699 and is buried in a vault at St John's Co-Cathedral. He is estimated to have produced roughly 700 paintings over his career.

Museums consistently place Preti among the central painters of the Roman and Neapolitan Baroque. The National Gallery, London, describes him as one of the principal painters active in Rome in the mid-seventeenth century and a leading painter in Naples in the late 1650s, and credits his early style to training under the influence of Caravaggio. The National Gallery of Canada emphasizes the scale of his religious commissions and the considerable acclaim he received during his lifetime. His late career in Malta, capped by the redecoration of St John's Co-Cathedral, is treated by Maltese institutions as the defining achievement of his career and one of the most complete surviving decorative programs by any Baroque painter. Modern scholarly attention has included quadricentennial exhibitions in 2013, in Virginia, Calabria, and Malta, marking the four-hundredth anniversary of his birth.

Preti's market operates in the Old Master auction category rather than the contemporary market, and results are correspondingly episodic. The best fully documented result is a double-sided red-chalk drawing, Recto: Study for the Figure of Adrian Fortescue (verso: Study for the Figure of Juan d'Eguaras), which sold for USD 1,758,000 at Sotheby's New York on 4 February 2026, a record for the artist on paper. Other higher figures have been reported, including a MutualArt-listed price of about USD 2.17 million for a painting titled David Playing the Harp Before Saul and a Christie's New York sale of The Liberation of Saint Peter for about USD 1.5 million in February 2025, but neither could be confirmed with full sale particulars (auction house and exact date, in the first case) in the sources reviewed for this profile. Institutions have also been active buyers: the National Gallery of Art in Washington acquired his 1660s canvas A Man Cutting Tobacco, which had previously changed hands at public auction for roughly USD 1.13 million including fees, and in 2026 the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts announced the acquisition of a painting by Preti, whose specific title was not confirmed in the sources reviewed. Because sales of his work are infrequent and prices depend heavily on subject, condition, and attribution certainty, any single result should be read in that context rather than as a smooth market trend line.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No published catalogue raisonne was confirmed in the sources reviewed for this profile. Attribution and authentication rest on museum and academic scholarship, documented provenance, and technical or archival research, including work carried out at St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, where his largest surviving cycle remains in situ.

There is no published catalogue raisonne confirmed for Preti, so attribution, provenance, and condition reporting from reputable Old Master specialists matter more than they would for an artist with a settled scholarly catalogue; some paintings that pass through the market carry a qualified "attributed to" designation rather than a firm attribution, and that distinction affects value. His supply is fixed rather than growing, since he has been dead since 1699, and the market for his work is thin and dominated by museum-grade pieces and occasional major auction lots rather than frequent trading. Given that thinness, and given that reported price rankings for his top lots are not all independently confirmed, collectors should treat any single headline price, including the current documented auction record, as one data point rather than a trend.
