Michaël Borremans

Michaël Borremans was born in 1963 in Geraardsbergen, Belgium. He trained in photography, graphic arts, drawing, and engraving at Sint-Lucas (the Luca School of Arts) in Ghent, earning an M.F.A. from Hogeschool voor Wetenschap en Kunst in 1996. He worked for several years as a teacher at the Secondary Municipal Art Institute of Ghent before shifting from photography into drawing and, later, painting during the late 1990s. He is largely self-taught as a painter.

His paintings, drawings, and films are known for staged, ambiguous scenes: solitary figures in period-inflected dress, fragmented bodies, and quietly theatrical compositions that borrow the language of art history without restaging it literally.
