Michael Duncan Smither

Michael Duncan Smither was born on 29 October 1939 in New Plymouth, New Zealand. He attended New Plymouth Boys' High School before moving to Auckland in the late 1950s to study at the Elam School of Fine Arts, where he trained from around 1959 to 1960; no completed degree from Elam is documented in available sources. He held his first solo exhibition in 1961 and went on to build a body of work centered on domestic interiors, coastal subjects, and, later in his career, rock pools rendered with a hard-edge clarity.

In 1970 Smither held the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship at the University of Otago, and a related solo exhibition, Michael Smither: Frances Hodgkins Fellow 1970, was staged at the Otago Museum foyer in Dunedin in 1973. In 1986 the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth organized a comprehensive survey of his work that toured New Zealand. He is also a composer, and several of his later exhibition titles, including Shared Harmonics and The Colours of 12 Sounds, reflect a practice that moves between painting and music.

Smither was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2004 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. He now lives at Otama Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula and continues to exhibit, including Here & Now at ARTIS Gallery, Auckland, in 2021. He is represented by The Little Gallery in Tairua and Whangamata.

Dealer and market commentary consistently frame him as a central figure of a homegrown school of hard-edge realism, and note that he has exhibited widely across New Zealand for more than six decades. The recurring thread across gallery and market writing is his sustained, decades-long focus on close observation, first of domestic interiors and later of the rock pools and coastal forms of the Coromandel, where he has lived for much of his later career.

Smither's market trades almost entirely in New Zealand dollars through Auckland's International Art Centre. His all-time auction high is Two Rock Pools, which sold under the hammer for NZD 516,000 at International Art Centre, Auckland, in late 2022 (reported as November 2022 by the Australian Art Sales Digest and December 2022 by other sources, with no source giving an exact day), a price reported as a record for a work by a living New Zealand artist. That result surpassed his previous record, Sea Wall and Kingfisher 1967, which sold for NZD 342,000 at the same house on 30 October 2019 and was itself described at the time as a record for a living New Zealand artist. Another notable result is Saint Francis and the Wolf, which sold for NZD 240,000, also in 2019.

Smither's record prices are tied closely to specific, recognizable subjects, particularly his rock pool paintings, so the choice of work matters more than a simple trend line. His market is domestic and NZD-denominated, concentrated through International Art Centre in Auckland, and collectors working in other currencies should treat any conversion with care rather than as a fixed benchmark. There is no catalogue raisonne, so provenance and verification rely on his representing gallery and on auction house records. His sustained solo exhibition activity into the 2020s, alongside consistent auction market visibility, is the strongest signal of his ongoing critical standing.
