Michael Dweck

Michael Dweck was born on September 26, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, initially in architecture before shifting into communication and fine arts, and received a bachelor's degree in Fine Art.

Dweck spent more than two decades as an advertising creative director, winning a Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity among more than forty international advertising honors. Around 2001 he stepped away from advertising to focus on fine-art photography, publishing The End: Montauk, N.Y., a photographic study of the surfers and fishermen of Montauk, New York, a place he had been visiting since the 1970s. The related exhibition opened at Sotheby's in New York in 2003, making him the first living photographer given a solo show there.

He followed with Mermaids in 2008, an exhibition that traveled to Paris, Brussels, Hamburg, New York, Tokyo, and Monaco, and with Habana Libre, a project on Cuban youth culture that opened in 2011 and 2012 in San Francisco, Havana, New York, Toronto, and Tokyo. The Havana showing is described by multiple sources as the first solo museum exhibition in Cuba by a living American artist or photographer since the United States embargo began, though the exact wording of that claim varies by source.

In the following decade Dweck moved into feature filmmaking. His directorial debut, The Last Race, premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and won the Special Jury Award for Artistic Vision at the Florida Film Festival. His second feature, The Truffle Hunters, co-directed with Gregory Kershaw, premiered at Sundance in 2020 and won both a Directors Guild of America Award and an American Society of Cinematographers Award for documentary in 2021. His third feature, Gaucho Gaucho, again with Kershaw, premiered at Sundance in 2024. He lives and works in New York City and in Montauk, New York.
