Why Michelle Sakhai matters
Michelle Sakhai is a contemporary American painter known for abstract compositions built with gold and silver metal leaf, and for a biography that blends Japanese and Persian heritage into the imagery and material choices of her work. For a collector, she represents a different kind of case than a blue-chip name: an actively exhibiting artist with a growing footprint of galleries, institutional placements, and corporate collections, but a public auction history that is, so far, a single confirmed data point.

Biography
Michelle Sakhai was born in 1983 on Long Island, New York, to a Japanese mother and an Iranian father, and her work is frequently described as drawing on both sides of that heritage. She earned a BFA in Art History with a minor in Fine Art from Hofstra University in 2004, graduating with high honors, and supplemented that training with non-degree study in Barcelona, Spain, and at the Marchutz School of Art in Aix-en-Provence, France. In 2006 she received an artist's grant to attend the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. She went on to complete an MFA in Painting at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2010.
Sakhai is known for oil paintings that incorporate gold and silver leaf, a technique she uses to build luminous, layered abstract surfaces that she has connected in interviews to themes of spirituality, light, and energy. She has lectured at institutions including the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. She is based between New York City and Delray Beach, Florida.
Critical reception
Independent critical coverage of Sakhai's work in major art publications is limited, and no exact, verifiable critic quotation from a major outlet could be confirmed for this profile. What is well documented, across her own materials, gallery statements, and university and press profiles, is a consistent framing of her gold and silver leaf technique and her Japanese and Persian heritage as the defining features of her practice, and a description of her work as abstract and spiritually oriented. Her exhibition history, which spans university galleries, resort and hospital settings, and commercial galleries in the United States, South Korea, and India, points to an artist building audience and institutional relationships steadily rather than through a single breakout museum moment.
Market
Sakhai's presence in the market runs primarily through gallery representation and institutional or corporate placements rather than through a deep public auction history. Her documented auction high is a work titled On the Path, an oil and metal-leaf painting on canvas dated 2017, which sold for HKD 125,000 (against an estimate of HKD 40,000 to 50,000) at Phillips in Hong Kong, in a sale recorded under sale code HK010120, lot 142. That price converts to roughly USD 16,000 at exchange rates contemporaneous with the sale. The public lot record does not state the exact calendar date of that auction. No later or higher public auction result has been identified as of this writing. Her work has also entered several corporate and institutional collections, including the Fine Art Collection at Montefiore Einstein in New York, the HSBC corporate collection in San Francisco, and the Miraval Berkshires Wellness Resort and Spa in Lenox, Massachusetts.

What collectors should know
Sakhai's secondary market is thin: a single confirmed auction result at a regional evening sale is not enough to establish a reliable price trend, and collectors should treat that figure as a data point rather than a benchmark. There is no catalogue raisonne for her work, so provenance and authenticity questions would need to be worked through her representing galleries or her studio directly. Her value proposition for a collector at this stage rests more on the pace of her institutional and gallery placements than on auction performance, which has not yet been tested at scale.
