Why Milo Matthieu matters
Milo Matthieu is an emerging Haitian American painter whose collage-based abstraction has moved quickly from studio residencies and gallery group shows into a small but growing footprint in public collections. For collectors, he represents an early-career artist whose market is still forming: gallery representation on two continents, a first entry into museum and institutional collections, and a still-thin auction history that leaves room for real price discovery in the years ahead.

Biography
Milo Matthieu was born in 1990, most sources place his birth in Los Angeles, California, though at least one profile lists New York. He is a first-generation Haitian American painter and mixed-media artist who now lives and works in New York, largely based in Brooklyn.
He attended St. John's University in Queens, New York, beginning around 2010, initially intending to study music. He later transferred to Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah, where he shifted his focus to photography and, for his senior thesis, began experimenting with collage and layered paint over his own photographs, a process that carried directly into his mature painting practice. No source documents the specific degree he was awarded at either school.
Matthieu's paintings and collages draw on Surrealist and Dada traditions through a process he and his galleries describe as psychic automatism, an intuitive, largely unplanned method of composing imagery. In 2020 he completed the La Brea Studio Residency at The Cabin in Los Angeles, a period that preceded his first significant run of solo exhibitions. He has since held solo shows with Kravets Wehby Gallery in New York (2021), Sorry We're Closed in Brussels (2022), M+B Gallery in Los Angeles (2023), and Jupiter in Miami Beach (2024), alongside group exhibitions and art fair presentations including Independent New York.
Critical reception
Gallery and platform writing on Matthieu consistently frames his work through the lens of psychic automatism, an intuitive, largely unplanned process of composing paintings and collages that both Artsy and Artsper trace directly to Surrealist and Dada precedents. Coverage emphasizes the movement from photography-based collage, developed during his college thesis work, into a painting practice built from layered, often reworked imagery. No named critic writing in a major art publication has yet produced a widely circulated, quotable assessment of his work, which is consistent with an artist early in a gallery and institutional trajectory rather than one with an extended critical record.
Market
Matthieu's best documented auction result is Blue Monday, which sold for USD 176,400 at Phillips in New York on 28 September 2021. That result remains, to date, his highest recorded public sale; other tracked auction prices for his work run well below that figure, with most results in the low thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. A work titled I, Too later sold for about USD 156,250 at Phillips on 25 September 2025, the second-highest documented result for the artist.
He is currently represented by Jupiter in Miami Beach and by Sorry We're Closed in Brussels, both of which have mounted solo exhibitions and presented his work at major art fairs such as Independent New York in 2024. According to gallery-published records, his work has entered the public collections of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, the Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti, and The Bunker Artspace in West Palm Beach; this list has not been independently confirmed beyond gallery materials.

What collectors should know
Matthieu's market is young. His auction history is short, with a wide gap between his single strongest result and the bulk of his other tracked sales, so any single price should be read as one data point rather than a stable trend line. There is no catalogue raisonne and no formal authentication program; provenance and verification currently run through his two representing galleries. His institutional footprint, three public collections cited in gallery materials and a fast-moving exhibition calendar since 2020, is a meaningful early signal, but collectors should weigh that against the limited number of public sales available to benchmark value.
