Miroslaw Balka

Miroslaw Balka was born on 16 December 1958 in Warsaw, Poland, and was raised in Otwock, a small town outside the capital, in the same childhood home that later became his studio. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1985. No earlier schooling or additional degrees are publicly documented.

Balka works primarily in sculpture, installation, and video, using plain industrial and domestic materials, including steel, felt, ash, soap, and concrete, to build objects and spaces that evoke the body, memory, and Poland's twentieth-century history. His Catholic upbringing and the legacy of the Second World War and the Holocaust are recurring reference points in his work.

His international career began early: he took part in the Venice Biennale in 1990, documenta IX in Kassel in 1992, and the Sydney Biennale the same year, then represented Poland at the Venice Biennale in 1993.
