Narayan Shridhar Bendre

Narayan Shridhar Bendre was born on 21 August 1910 in Indore, in what is now Madhya Pradesh, India. He earned a B.A. from Holkar College, under Agra University, in 1933, and pursued art training at the State School of Art in Indore, completing a diploma in painting in 1934, and at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay, where he received a Government Diploma in Art around the same period. In 1947 and 1948 he traveled to the United States on a study tour sponsored by the Federation of American Artists, and studied graphic art at the Art Students League in New York under Armin Landeck.

Bendre spent much of his career as a teacher, becoming a leading figure in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He was a founding member of the Baroda Group of Artists, which became an influential center of modern Indian painting outside Bombay.

His honors include the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992, India's fourth highest and third highest civilian honors respectively, awarded for his contribution to art. He died on 19 February 1992 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

Bendre is consistently described in art historical and market sources as a central figure of Indian modern painting, credited with fusing European post-impressionist and pointillist technique with Indian rural and landscape subject matter.
