Nasreddine Dinet

Alphonse-Etienne Dinet was born on 28 March 1861 in Paris. He attended the Lycee Henri-IV from 1871, enrolled at the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts in 1881, and studied the following year at the Academie Julian under William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He first traveled to Algeria in 1884, drawn to the region around Bou Saada, and made it his permanent home from 1903.

In 1889 he was a founding member, alongside Meissonier, Puvis de Chavannes, Rodin, Carolus-Duran, and Charles Cottet, of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and he won a silver medal for painting that same year at the Paris Exposition Universelle. He was also among the founders of the Societe des Peintres Orientalistes Francais. In July 1896 he was named a Chevalier of the Legion d'honneur.

Over the following decades Dinet deepened his ties to Algeria, formally converting to Islam and finalizing that conversion in 1913, when he adopted the name Nasreddine. Biographical accounts state he later completed the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Nasreddine Dinet died on 24 December 1929 in Paris. He was buried in Bou Saada, Algeria, on 12 January 1930, in a funeral reported to have drawn thousands of mourners.

Specialist Orientalist dealers have described Dinet as one of the cornerstones of late nineteenth and early twentieth century French Orientalist painting, and note that his work retained popularity in both France and Algeria long after his death. Recent scholarship has focused less on formal technique than on his unusual biography: a French academic painter who converted to Islam and took an Algerian name, a combination that has made him a case study in reassessments of Orientalism as something more complicated than a one-directional colonial gaze. The Institut du Monde Arabe's 2024 retrospective, Etienne Dinet, Algerian Passions, framed his paintings of Bou Saada as a record of genuine attachment to Algeria rather than distanced spectacle, a reading that has become the dominant institutional view of his work.

The best documented auction result for Nasreddine Dinet is Jeunes baigneuses au bord de l'Oued, reported to have sold for EUR 1,735,000 (about USD 2.7 million) at Gros et Delettrez in Paris on 23 June 2008, cited in market summaries as his record price. That figure is not fully corroborated across every market database, and collectors should treat it as a reported high rather than a fully reconciled one. A more recent, well documented result is Dancers in a Moonlit Palm Grove, which sold at Sotheby's London Orientalist Sale on 24 October 2023 for a hammer price of GBP 610,000 (about GBP 774,700 with premium, roughly USD 946,700), well below the 2008 figure. His work continues to appear regularly in the Orientalist sale seasons at major auction houses in London and Paris, with no gallery or estate currently identified as representing the artist.

There is no catalogue raisonne for Nasreddine Dinet and no living estate or foundation to authenticate works, so provenance history and expertise from auction houses that specialize in Orientalist painting carry unusual weight. His auction market is thin and concentrated in occasional major Orientalist sales in Paris and London rather than steady year-round activity, and reported price figures for his top lots vary somewhat between market databases, so any single headline number should be checked against the underlying sale record. Collectors should also be skeptical of unverified claims circulating online about extraordinary sale prices for his work, since no credible auction database or major house supports figures far above his documented results.
