Neo Rauch

Neo Rauch was born on 18 April 1960 in Leipzig, East Germany. According to Sotheby's and The New Yorker, his parents died in a train accident when he was one month old, and he was raised by his grandparents in Aschersleben, where he later passed his Abitur at the Thomas-Muntzer-Oberschule (now the Gymnasium Stephaneum).

He studied painting at the Hochschule fur Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts) from 1981 to 1986, then continued as a Meisterschuler, first associated with Professor Arno Rink and, through 1990, in the master class of Professor Bernhard Heisig. His first solo exhibition took place in 1991 at Galerie am Thomaskirchhof in Leipzig. Through the 1990s he became a central figure of what critics named the New Leipzig School, a label he and several peers have resisted even as it stuck to describe their shared training and figurative approach.

His international profile expanded through the 2001 Venice Biennale, where his work was presented as "Currents 90: Neo Rauch," and through the 2002 Vincent Award (the Vincent van Gogh Biennial Award for Contemporary Art in Europe), which came with a solo exhibition at the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht. In 2007 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York presented a body of new work made specifically for its modern-wing mezzanine, titled "Para." A 2018 retrospective, "Dromos," filled four floors of Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle, and in 2023 MO.CO. in Montpellier organized his first French retrospective, "The Dream of Reason." He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st Class, in 2018. He continues to live and work in Leipzig, where 2026 brings a retrospective of his graphic work at Museum De Reede in Antwerp and a new presentation with Galerie EIGEN + ART at Art Basel.

Critics place Rauch at the center of the Leipzig school's international rise. Writing in The New Yorker in 2021, critic Andrea K. Scott discussed Rauch as a leading figure of the Leipzig school, a group of painters associated with the city's art academy that gained renown in the 1990s for large-scale figurative canvases combining social realist composition with pop-culture imagery. That framing captures the recurring critical thread in writing about Rauch: paintings built on the compositional grammar of state-sponsored realism, populated by ambiguous, half-narrative figures drawn from advertising, folklore, and industrial imagery, that resist a single reading. Museums have treated this ambiguity as a strength, giving him major solo presentations from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to MO.CO. and Museum de Fundatie, while some critics continue to debate how much of the work's power depends on nostalgia for, or unease with, its East German visual sources.

Rauch's exact all-time auction record is difficult to pin down from primary sources. Figures reported across market databases and secondary commentary vary in title, currency, and date, and do not fully agree with one another. The most fully documented high-value result is Gut Gut, which Sotheby's states sold for USD 1.2 million in 2016, describing Rauch as one of the most expensive living German artists at auction. Other sources cite higher, less certain figures, including a reported Christie's high near GBP 1.1 million in 2014 and a maximum recorded painting price near USD 1.76 million with no title or date attached, but these cannot be independently confirmed against a primary sale record. A more recent, well-documented example, Produktion (1998), sold for USD 635,000 at Sotheby's New York in November 2025, below its earlier 2011 sale price of USD 1.06 million at Sotheby's London, illustrating that individual outcomes vary considerably by work.

His graphic work is documented through the Grafikstiftung Neo Rauch, a foundation he established in his hometown of Aschersleben, while paintings are generally verified through his two galleries, Galerie EIGEN + ART and David Zwirner.
