Ng Po Wan

Ng Po Wan, also recorded as Ng Po-wan and, in Chinese, as 伍步雲 or 伍步云 (Wu Buyun, Wu Bu Yun), was born in 1904 in Taishan, Guangdong. He graduated in fine art from the University of the Philippines in 1931 and afterward settled in Hong Kong, where he became an influential figure in the local arts scene, working primarily in oil.

Circa 1961, Ng joined the Gengzi Art Club and began integrating traditional Chinese brushwork into his oil paintings, using short, concise brushstrokes and black outlined contours, a hybrid approach that came to define his mature style. The Hong Kong Museum of Art describes his palette as bright and cheerful even as his figures carried social commentary on the harder edges of Hong Kong life. A retrospective of his oils was held at the Chinese Art Gallery in Beijing in 1979.

Sources disagree on when Ng left Hong Kong for Canada: a Christie's lot essay places the move in 1957, to rejoin his children, while a 1990s South China Morning Post profile describes his emigration as taking place in 1975.
