Why Nguyen Khang matters
Nguyen Khang belongs to the founding generation of modern Vietnamese lacquer painters, the group that turned son mai, a decorative craft technique, into a serious painting medium in the 1930s and 1940s alongside contemporaries such as Nguyen Gia Tri and Pham Hau. Trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi, he went on to lead Vietnamese art education for more than a decade. For a collector, his significance rests less on a large or liquid market than on his documented role in building the lacquer tradition that Vietnamese modern art is still valued for today.

Biography
Nguyen Khang was born in Yen Thai village, Tay Ho district, Hanoi. Most major sources, including the English and Vietnamese Wikipedia entries, Bonhams, and the Nguyen Art Gallery biography, give his birth date as 5 February 1912, though several Vietnamese sources, including the newspaper Nhan Dan and other biographical accounts, cite 1911 with varying exact dates. The two clusters of sources do not agree, and this profile follows the more widely repeated 1912 date while noting the discrepancy.
He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi in 1930, at age nineteen, and graduated in 1935. In 1937 he traveled to Paris to take part in the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques, where his lacquer work received an award. Further exhibition awards followed at the Sadeai Exhibition in 1939 and the Duy Nhat Exhibition in 1943. After 1945 he taught at resistance-era art schools, later spending time in China from 1951 to 1957, described in sources as a period of teaching and further study, though no specific institution, city, or degree there is documented.
Back in Vietnam, he was appointed vice-principal of the Vietnam College of Fine Arts in 1957 and served as its principal from 1962 to 1974, while remaining a permanent member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association from 1957 to 1983. He is reported to have presided over the funeral committee for President Ho Chi Minh in 1969. He died in Ho Chi Minh City on 15 November 1989, per the English and Vietnamese Wikipedia entries. In 2000 he received, posthumously, the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Art for a group of lacquer paintings that included Fishing Under the Moonlight, Peace and Friendship, Marching Through the Stream, and The Horse Herders Family.
Critical reception
Nguyen Khang is consistently described in Vietnamese art history and in international auction cataloguing as a pioneer of modern Vietnamese lacquer painting, credited with helping move the medium from decorative craft toward a fine-art practice capable of carrying historical and patriotic subject matter. In 2000 the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Art was awarded to him posthumously for a named group of lacquer paintings, including Fishing Under the Moonlight, Peace and Friendship, Marching Through the Stream, and The Horse Herders Family, and Vietnamese sources describe the citation as praising the works for their beauty and their expression of the country's history and resistance. His long tenure as an art school administrator, first as vice-principal from 1957 and then as principal from 1962 to 1974, is repeatedly cited as evidence of his standing as both artist and teacher within the Vietnamese art establishment.
Market
Nguyen Khang's auction market is thin and mostly concentrated in France and Hong Kong. His all-time auction high is La famille de bergers (Gia dinh muc dong), a traditional lacquer painting that sold for EUR 501,240 including buyer's premium at Aguttes in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on 28 November 2022, against a hammer price of EUR 390,000. Other lacquer works attributed to him, including Nha Rong Wharf at Bonhams Hong Kong and Danseuse at Sotheby's Hong Kong, carried far lower estimates, though available research does not confirm their final sale prices. Market valuation resources describe a typical estimate range for his lacquer paintings of roughly EUR 10,000 to 200,000, which makes the 2022 Aguttes result an outlier rather than a representative price. Given how few of his works are documented at auction, provenance should be checked with particular care before any purchase.

Authentication and provenance
No catalogue raisonne.
No catalogue raisonne has been published for this artist. As a deceased painter from the 1930s to 1980s with only a handful of documented auction sales, attribution relies on museum records, auction house provenance research, and family or institutional documentation rather than a single authenticating body.

What collectors should know
There is no published catalogue raisonne for Nguyen Khang, and current research turned up no gallery or estate that formally represents him today, so buyers should expect to rely on museum records, auction house provenance research, and family or institutional documentation rather than a single authenticating body. His birth year is disputed between 1911 and 1912 across otherwise credible sources, a detail worth confirming independently before relying on any single biography. His market is thin, with only a handful of internationally documented sales and one clear outlier result at Aguttes in 2022, so provenance and expert verification are especially important before any purchase given how little comparable sales data exists.
