Nguyen Tien Chung

Nguyen Tien Chung was born on 8 August 1914 in Uoc Le village, Tan Uoc commune, Thanh Oai district, in what was then Ha Dong province and is now part of Ha Noi. Biographical accounts describe a childhood habit of drawing plants and scenes to illustrate his teachers' lessons, which led him to sit the entrance exam for the Ecole Superieure des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, the French-run fine arts college in Hanoi. He was admitted in 1936 as part of Class XI and completed the program in the early 1940s, with sources giving 1940 or 1941 as the graduation year.

He worked across silk painting, lacquer, woodblock printing, oil, and gouache, and became known for scenes of rural labor, market days, young women, and soldiers rendered in a distinctly Vietnamese idiom. In 1946 he won prizes for two silk paintings at a national art exhibition. He began teaching at the Indochina Fine Arts College the same year, and by some accounts was active with the Viet Minh resistance in Hanoi between 1947 and 1953. From 1955 to around 1964 or 1965 he taught at Vietnam's College of Fine Arts, now Hanoi University of Fine Arts, where a number of his works remained on display.
