Nguyen Trung

Nguyen Trung was born in 1940 in Soc Trang, Vietnam. Accounts of his early art education differ. Several gallery biographies state he entered the Gia Dinh School of Fine Arts in Saigon around 1958, and Christie's auction house materials describe him training at what it calls Gia Dinh's High School, from which it states he graduated in 1962. Other, Vietnamese-language biographical sources instead describe him studying at the National College of Fine Arts in Saigon from about 1959, with one detailed account stating he left during his third year, around 1961, without completing the program. Early in his career he won a silver medal at the Saigon Spring Arts Exhibition, dated to either 1960 or 1961 depending on the source, and a gold medal at the same exhibition in 1963, a date on which sources agree.

He held his first solo exhibition in 1967 at the Alliance Francaise in Saigon. He was a founding figure of the Young Artists Association formed in Saigon in 1966, and one gallery source credits him as chairman of the Saigon Association of Young Painters from 1966 to 1973.
