Nicolae Grigorescu

Nicolae Grigorescu was born on 15 May 1838 in the village of Pitaru, Dâmbovița County, in what was then Wallachia. As a child he entered the icon-painting workshop of the Czech painter Anton Chladek in Bucharest, around 1846 to 1850, and painted icons and church decoration for sites including Băicoi and Căldărușani Monastery. He attended Saint Sava College in Bucharest but left before completing his studies once church commissions began to support him financially.

In the autumn of 1861, with the support of a scholarship arranged through Mihail Kogălniceanu, Grigorescu traveled to Paris. He began classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the spring of 1862, studying for roughly a year and a half, chiefly under Sebastien Cornu, whose studio also included a young Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Romanian art historians have debated the precise documentation of this period. An early biographer could not find his name in the school's official registers, but later research, notably Barbu Brezianu's 1959 study, established that he did follow courses there into 1863. During and after this time he painted alongside the Barbizon School in the forest of Fontainebleau, an experience that shaped his mature style.

Grigorescu returned to Romania and, between 1869 and 1873, built his reputation in Bucharest, showing 26 works at the 1870 Living Artists' Exhibition, where he won the exhibition's top jury prize, and 146 works at the 1873 Friends of the Fine Arts Exhibition, a show later described as the peak of his early domestic success. He went on to become Romania's leading painter of rural and peasant subjects, and in 1899 he was named an honorary member of the Romanian Academy. He died on 21 July 1907 in his home in Câmpina, in the Kingdom of Romania, at the age of 69. That house is now the Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial Museum.

Grigorescu is treated in Romanian art history and by national museums as the artist who moved Romanian painting from academic and icon traditions toward a modern, European vocabulary, most often described as the country's first painter of European standing and one of the founders of modern Romanian painting. The Romanian art historian George Oprescu characterized him as a fundamentally visual, rather than imaginative, artist, whose sensitivity to the fine gradations of light and rural life he considered his defining trait. In a French exhibition dossier for a Barbizon museum retrospective, Roxana Theodorescu, then director of the National Museum of Art of Romania, framed his career as the moment Romanian painting caught up with the fresh currents of European art. Institutions in Romania and, more recently, Poland have continued to present him as a national painter whose idealized images of peasant life remain a subject of ongoing critical discussion.

Grigorescu's market is concentrated almost entirely in Romania and is dominated by a single auction house, Artmark of Bucharest. His current auction high is Țărăncuță odihnindu-se (Little Peasant Girl Resting), which sold for EUR 365,000 at Artmark in Bucharest on 12 December 2024, a price widely reported as both the artist's own record and the highest price paid for any painting on the Romanian art market since 1990. The artist's next-highest results at the same house are EUR 340,000 for Țărăncuță cu basma albă (Peasant Girl in a White Beret), sold in 2018, and EUR 330,000 for Naiadă dormind (Sleeping Nymph), sold as a separate lot at the same 12 December 2024 auction. Outside Romania, Bonhams New York has featured his work, including The Bull Cart, as a highlight lot in European paintings sales, but no international hammer price confirming a higher result has been identified.

There is no catalogue raisonne of Grigorescu's work, and authentication in practice depends on the expertise of specialist Romanian auction houses, chiefly Artmark, together with the scholarship held by the National Museum of Art of Romania and the Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial Museum in Câmpina. His significant works are concentrated in these and a small number of other Romanian and regional museum collections, which limits the volume of paintings that reach the open market and helps explain why the artist's record prices have all been set at one domestic auction house rather than at international salerooms. For a collector, that combination, deep national institutional standing paired with a thin, largely domestic secondary market, means provenance and museum association carry unusual weight in valuing any individual work.
