Why Nicolas Party matters
Nicolas Party turned soft pastel, a medium associated with eighteenth-century portraiture, into the material for some of the most visible contemporary painting of the last decade. His saturated, dreamlike still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, often staged inside murals he paints directly onto gallery walls, moved from a first Lausanne solo show in 2010 to a multi-million-dollar auction market within about twelve years. He is also a case study in how fast a young contemporary market can compress and then correct: his auction turnover peaked in 2023 and has fallen sharply since, a pattern collectors should read carefully rather than extrapolate from his single highest sale.

Biography
Nicolas Party was born in 1980 in Lausanne, Switzerland. As a teenager in the 1990s he was active in graffiti, tagging trains and walls, an experience he has cited as formative for his interest in scale, surface, and public-facing work, alongside a more traditional painting practice shaped by Swiss landscape painters such as Ferdinand Hodler and Felix Vallotton. He earned his BFA from the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL) in 2004 and his MFA from the Glasgow School of Art in 2009.
Party works primarily in soft pastel, a medium he has connected to the eighteenth-century portraitist Rosalba Carriera, applying it to canvas and linen with a smooth, matte finish that gives his color a distinct intensity. He held his first solo exhibition at La Placette in Lausanne in 2010 and his first New York solo show at the Swiss Institute in 2012. He frequently designs his exhibitions as full environments, painting large murals onto gallery walls that frame and stage the hung works, an approach he extended in a 2019 commission for the FLAG Art Foundation in New York that paired his pastel murals with works from the foundation's permanent collection. In 2021 and 2022 he created Draw the Curtain, a mural wrapping the full circumference of the Hirshhorn Museum's outdoor scaffolding in Washington, D.C.
He has held solo exhibitions at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Le Consortium in Dijon, MASI Lugano, M WOODS in Beijing, and the Magritte Museum in Brussels, and Phaidon published a monograph on his work in 2022. He lives and works between New York and Brussels.
Critical reception
Critics have generally credited Party with reviving pastel as a serious contemporary medium and with an unusually sophisticated approach to exhibition design, treating each gallery show as a total environment rather than a sequence of individual works. His large-scale public murals, including the Hirshhorn commission, have been read as an extension of his teenage graffiti practice into an institutional context, and reviewers frequently trace his palette and subject matter to a lineage running from Swiss landscape painting through Surrealism and twentieth-century figuration. The more skeptical strand of commentary, concentrated in market journalism rather than curatorial writing, has focused on how quickly his auction prices rose after 2021 and whether that pace was sustainable, a question that his subsequent price decline has done little to resolve either way.
Market
Party's auction market rose quickly through the early 2020s before cooling. His auction high is Blue Sunset, a 2018 soft pastel on linen that sold for the equivalent of roughly USD 6.7 million at Christie's Hong Kong on 30 November 2022, more than doubling his prior record of about USD 3.3 million set the year before with Landscape at a benefit auction for the New York City AIDS Memorial. His annual auction turnover peaked at roughly USD 25 million in 2023 before falling sharply in the years that followed, a decline that market reporting has tied to a broader cooling in demand for young contemporary painting rather than to any single event in his career. Party has been candid about the risk this kind of trajectory poses to secondary-market buyers, noting publicly that paying late-cycle secondary prices for mid-career artists carries real downside.

What collectors should know
Party's auction record was set in a single sale in Hong Kong in November 2022 and his overall auction turnover has fallen substantially since a 2023 peak, so collectors should weigh that headline price against a broader and more recent softening in demand rather than treat it as representative of current market conditions. The absence of a catalogue raisonne means provenance and verification through his galleries carry added weight. Party's own public comments have cautioned buyers against paying secondary-market prices calibrated to an artist's earlier peak, a caution that applies as directly to his own market as to any other.
