Painting

Nikolai Alexandrovich Yaroshenko

Nikolai Alexandrovich Yaroshenko was one of the leading painters of the Peredvizhniki, the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions that shaped Russian realism in the second half of the nineteenth century. Working as an army officer by profession and a painter by calling, he built a body of portraits and genre scenes, of students, prisoners, and laborers, that became touchstones for how Russian art of his era pictured social conscience. For collectors and researchers, he matters less as an active auction name today than as a historically significant realist whose surviving works are concentrated in major Russian and Ukrainian museum collections.

Nikolai Alexandrovich Yaroshenko was born on 13 December 1846 (1 December, Old Style) in Poltava, then in the Russian Empire and now in Ukraine, into a military family. He attended the Poltava Cadet Corps (also cited as the Petrovsky Cadet Corps) before entering the Mikhailovsky Artillery Academy in St. Petersburg, from which sources place his graduation in 1869 or 1870. He spent his career as an army officer, retiring as a Major General in 1892, while pursuing painting in parallel.

His art training ran alongside his military schooling. He took private lessons with Adrian Volkov, then studied at the drawing school of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts under Ivan Kramskoi, and attended the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg as a non-matriculated, external student, completing those studies in 1874. He joined the Peredvizhniki and exhibited with the group for the rest of his life, becoming known for portraits of the Russian intelligentsia (including writers, actors, and scientists) and for genre paintings such as The Stoker, The Prisoner, Life Is Everywhere, The Student, and Sister of Mercy, works that are now held mainly at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.

Yaroshenko kept a home in Kislovodsk in the Caucasus, where he painted mountain landscapes alongside his portrait and genre work. He died in Kislovodsk on 7 July 1898 (the Gregorian date most widely cited in reference sources; some Russian-language sources place the Julian equivalent on 25 or 26 June). English-language sources generally attribute his death to pulmonary tuberculosis, while some Russian sources and cataloguing authorities describe a sudden heart attack. After his death, his collection passed largely to Russian and Ukrainian public museums, most notably the State Russian Museum and the Poltava Art Museum. His former Kislovodsk home is preserved as the Memorial Museum-estate of N. A. Yaroshenko.

Yaroshenko is remembered as a central figure of the Peredvizhniki, the realist movement that used everyday and often marginalized subjects, students, laborers, prisoners, the sick, to carry social commentary. His portraits of writers, actors, and scientists placed him within the circle of Ivan Kramskoi's realist portraiture, while paintings such as The Student and Life Is Everywhere are cited repeatedly in Russian art history as emblematic of the movement's engagement with contemporary social conditions. No exact, citable verbatim quotation from a named critic in a major outlet could be confirmed for this profile.

Yaroshenko's market is that of a historically important nineteenth-century Russian realist rather than an artist with an active, well-documented contemporary auction track record. The Russian auction house Sovcom lists him among its Peredvizhniki-era artists and has carried at least one signed oil painting with a pre-sale estimate in the range of RUB 500,000 to 1,000,000, but no confirmed hammer price, work title, and sale date for an all-time record could be established from accessible public sources as of this writing. Most of his major works are already held in Russian and Ukrainian public museums, which limits the volume of museum-quality material that can circulate at auction.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No catalogue raisonne of the artist's work has been identified. Because most of his output entered Russian and Ukrainian public museums, works are generally verified against museum accession records, Peredvizhniki exhibition history, and provenance research rather than a certifying body.

There is no published catalogue raisonne for Yaroshenko, and the absence of a strong secondary auction record means that provenance, exhibition history with the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions, and museum documentation carry unusual weight in verifying any given work. Basic biographical facts, birth in Poltava in 1846 and death in Kislovodsk in 1898, are well corroborated across sources, but the exact Julian calendar date and the precise cause of his death are recorded inconsistently even in reputable reference works, a reminder to treat granular biographical claims about him with some caution. Because the great majority of his significant paintings already sit in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Poltava Art Museum, and the Kislovodsk memorial estate, the pool of exhibition-quality works available to private collectors is inherently small.
