Nikolai Makarov

Nikolai Makarov was born on 21 July 1952 in Moscow. He began as a largely self-taught painter in Russia before relocating to East Berlin in 1975. There he studied French and German at the Maurice Thorez Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow from 1969 to 1972, then pursued history at Humboldt University in Berlin through 1980. In 1984 he was admitted to the Akademie der Kunste in East Berlin, completing his studies in 1987 as a Meisterschuler of the illustrator and graphic artist Werner Klemke, with additional master-class training under the Austrian painter Rudolf Hausner.

In 1992 Makarov founded the Museum der Stille in Berlin's historic center, a space built around his own paintings and installations exploring stillness and quiet as pictorial subjects. Related installations have since traveled to Krochlendorff Castle in Brandenburg and to the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, New York. Since 2000 he has served as president of the Sergej Mawrizki Foundation and as director of the Berlin art association StilLeben e.V. In November 2024 he opened a Gulag remembrance room installation at the Museum der Stille, which received coverage in the Berlin press. He continues to live and work in Berlin.
