Nilima Sheikh

Born on 18 November 1945 in New Delhi, India, Nilima Sheikh studied history at Delhi University from 1962 to 1965 before turning to painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, from 1965 to 1971, where she trained under K. G. Subramanyan. She began exhibiting professionally in 1969 and has built a body of work in tempera on paper and canvas that draws on Indian and Persian miniature traditions, using layered, narrative compositions to address subjects including dowry violence, in her 1984 series When Champa Grew Up, and displacement and militarization in Kashmir, in the long-running project Each Night Put Kashmir in Your Dreams. She lives and works between Delhi and Baroda (Vadodara), India.

Sheikh's work is widely discussed for the way it reactivates historical Indian painting formats, including Pahari and Persian miniature and scroll conventions, as a vehicle for contemporary political and social content rather than as decorative revivalism. Her 2014 solo exhibition Each Night Put Kashmir in Your Dreams at the Art Institute of Chicago, her inclusion in documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel in 2017, and the presentation of the Kashmir project and related cycles at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2018, the Dhaka Art Summit in 2020, and Sharjah Biennial 15 in 2023 have consolidated her standing as a leading figure in the reconsideration of narrative painting within contemporary South Asian art. In 2023 Harvard's Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute named her its inaugural Distinguished Artist Fellow.
