Nja Mahdaoui

Nja Mahdaoui was born in 1937 in Tunis, Tunisia. In 1959 he took history of art and painting courses at the Atelier Libre in Carthage, run by the White Fathers Catholic missionaries. In 1965 he moved to Rome and enrolled at the Accademia di Sant'Andrea, studying painting technique, theory, and the philosophy of art before graduating with a degree in graphic design, an achievement for which he was awarded the academy's Silver Cup.

In 1968 the Tunisian government awarded him a scholarship for a two-year studio residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, running to 1970. During that period he also enrolled as an external candidate at the École du Louvre, in the department of Oriental Antiquities; secondary sources differ on the exact year he completed those studies, with some citing 1967, a date that sits awkwardly against his 1968 enrollment record.

Mahdaoui held his first solo exhibition in Tunis in 1965 and went on to build a practice centered on abstract compositions derived from Arabic script, rendered in ink on parchment and across wood, aluminum, brass, papyrus, melamine, and linen, as well as in tapestries, prints, and book illustrations.
