Norbert Bisky

Norbert Bisky was born on 10 October 1970 in Leipzig, in the former German Democratic Republic, into what several sources describe as a strongly communist family. The family later moved to Marzahn, an East Berlin housing district, when Bisky was around ten years old. He began university study in 1990 with German literature and art history at the Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin, then in 1993 shifted toward art at the Freie Kunstschule Berlin, before enrolling in painting at the Hochschule der Kunste, now the Universitat der Kunste (UdK) Berlin, from 1994 to 1999, in the class of Georg Baselitz. In 1999 he completed his studies as a Meisterschuler, a master-student qualification, under Baselitz. During his UdK years he also studied at the Salzburg Summer Academy under Jim Dine in 1994 and 1995, and spent an Erasmus exchange year at the Facultad de Bellas Artes of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1995.

Bisky went on to hold visiting professorships at the Haute Ecole d'Art et de Design (HEAD) in Geneva from 2008 to 2010, and at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste Braunschweig from 2016 to 2018. He was represented by Konig Galerie in Berlin for roughly a decade, until 2023, and since March 2025 has been represented by Esther Schipper, alongside long-running representation from Galerie Templon in Paris.
