Norbert Kricke

Norbert Kricke was born on 30 November 1922 in Dusseldorf, Germany. From 1946 to 1947 he studied at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in Berlin, where he was accepted as a Meisterschuler in the master class of the traditional sculptor Richard Scheibe and also studied with Hans Uhlmann, an early German abstract sculptor working in wire. No source documents a formal degree; by 1947 Kricke was working as a freelance artist in Dusseldorf.

Through the 1950s he developed his signature Raumplastik, sculptures built from bent and welded steel rods and wire that describe lines moving through space rather than solid volume. Curatorial writing on his work repeatedly returns to his own stated concern with space and movement over mass or figure. The work drew early international attention, including the 1958 Art Prize of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts in Chicago.

Kricke's institutional standing grew through the 1960s. He took part in documenta II (1959) and documenta III (1964) in Kassel and represented German sculpture at the 32nd Venice Biennale in 1964. In 1963 he received the Grosser Kunstpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen fur Bildhauerei, and in 1964 he was appointed professor of sculpture at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Dusseldorf. He went on to serve as the academy's rector from 1972 to 1981. He received the Wilhelm-Lehmbruck-Preis der Stadt Duisburg in 1971 and was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse in 1975.
