Otto Eerelman

Otto Eerelman was born on 23 March 1839 in Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands. After completing primary schooling, he enrolled in 1860 at the Academie Minerva in Groningen, where he studied drawing and painting under the academy's director, Johannes Hinderikus Egenberger, graduating in 1863. He then continued his training for roughly a year at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under a professor named Geefs, and during this Antwerp period, around 1865, he also worked briefly in the studio of the Dutch-born painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema. A short stay in Paris followed before he returned to Groningen.

From 1867 to around 1874 he taught at his old school, the Academie Minerva, while building a reputation as a painter of horses and, increasingly, dogs. He became closely associated with the Dutch royal family, serving informally as a court painter and producing repeated portraits of Princess, later Queen, Wilhelmina, including a well documented image of her as a girl with her pony. A large history painting sometimes attributed to him, depicting a 1672 horse inspection on Groningen's Grote Markt, is said to hang in the city's Stadhuis, though this attribution is not independently confirmed here. He returned to live permanently in Groningen in 1907 and remained there until his death on 3 October 1926, at the age of 87.

Contemporary and later commentary on Eerelman centers on his standing as a specialist animal painter and his court connections rather than on a documented record of medals or juried prizes; no verified award citations were found. The clearest institutional recognition on record is a large overview exhibition of his work staged by the Groninger Museum in 1995, which affirmed his continued standing in Dutch regional art history. Earlier accounts describe his broad popularity in Groningen in his own lifetime, but specific Salon appearances and dates outside the Netherlands are not documented with enough precision to list here.

The best documented public auction result for Eerelman is Best Friends, which sold at Bonhams in London for GBP 16,312.50 including premium; the exact calendar date of that sale is not confirmed in the sources available. Other public auction results are markedly lower, including a Dutch sale that closed around EUR 3,200, while dealer asking prices on platforms such as 1stDibs have ranged much higher, reportedly from roughly USD 52,500 to USD 198,500. Those dealer figures are retail asking prices rather than completed auction sales and should not be read as market benchmarks. Taken together, the evidence points to a market that is thin, regionally concentrated in the Netherlands, and highly dependent on the individual work and venue, rather than one with a smooth, well-populated price history.

There is no catalogue raisonne for Eerelman, so provenance and attribution generally rest on the expertise of specialist dealers and auction houses handling nineteenth century Dutch painting. Because his market includes both modest regional auction results and much higher dealer asking prices, collectors should treat any single quoted figure with caution and confirm comparable sale data before relying on it. His museum presence in the Netherlands, led by the Rijksmuseum and the Groninger Museum, is the more durable signal of his historical standing than any one auction result.
