Artist

Ouyang Chun

Chinese, b. 1974

Painting · Sculpture · Assemblage

Ouyang Chun occupies a distinctive place in contemporary Chinese art as an artist who came to painting outside the standard academy track and built a practice from discarded materials, expressionist brushwork, and a recurring cast of childlike, almost folkloric figures. For a collector, he is a case study in an artist with genuine institutional depth, a first museum solo outside China at the Belvedere in Vienna, exhibitions at Museum Folkwang and inclusion in the White Rabbit Collection, paired with an auction market that remains thin and whose full sale history is not fully documented in public records.

Ouyang Chun was born in 1974 in Beijing and was raised in Xi'an, where his father had been sent, before he eventually returned to Beijing, where he currently lives and works. Accounts of his formal training diverge in detail: gallery and auction-house texts describe him as having graduated from the Department of Art Education at Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts around 1995, while other institutional biographies describe him as having studied there only briefly before becoming essentially self-taught. Both strands agree that his formation owed more to independent development than to conventional academic training, and galleries describe this self-education as central to the versatile, unpolished quality of his painting, sculpture, and assemblage.

His work is known for transforming found and discarded objects, along with expressive, deliberately naive figuration, into paintings, installations, and bronze sculptures that read as personal mythologies of contemporary China. A major cycle titled "King," developed between 2006 and 2011, formed the centerpiece of "Painting the King," his first museum solo exhibition outside China, staged jointly by the Belvedere (Upper Belvedere) and Augarten Contemporary in Vienna in 2011. He followed this with "Weird and Wonderful" at Museum Folkwang in Essen in 2016 and "The Mortals" at ShanghART in Shanghai in 2019. More recently he has shown "Road to Heaven" at White Space in Beijing in 2023, appeared in the group exhibition "One and All" at the National Art Museum of China and in a two-artist show at the Whale Art Museum in Singapore in 2024, and is scheduled to present "Nirvana" at White Space in Beijing in 2026.

Ouyang Chun's critical standing rests mainly on institutional recognition rather than a large body of press criticism in Western outlets. The Belvedere's 2011 exhibition, staged with me Collectors Room Berlin, described his "King" cycle as the centerpiece of his first museum solo show outside China, a milestone that institutions and galleries continue to cite as a turning point in his international visibility. Subsequent museum and collection presentations, including Museum Folkwang in 2016 and his continued presence in the White Rabbit Collection in Sydney, have reinforced a consistent gallery narrative: an artist who works across painting, assemblage, and bronze sculpture, using discarded materials and a deliberately unschooled visual language to build a personal, often satirical vision of contemporary Chinese life. No verbatim quotes from named critics in major art press could be confirmed for this profile, so his reception here is described through documented exhibition history and institutional framing rather than reviewer commentary.

Ouyang Chun's highest publicly reported auction price is associated with "King and Queen" (2006), which MutualArt cites at approximately USD 1,042,434 for a painting sale; the exact currency conversion, auction house, and sale date are not confirmed in publicly accessible sources. A 2025 Christie's lot, "The Foregone Imperial Palace," carried a presale estimate of USD 800,000 to 1,200,000, but the realized price was not disclosed, so it is unclear whether a later sale has since exceeded the 2006 painting's reported figure. Collectors should treat these auction figures as directional, since much of the artist's sale history sits behind paywalled databases. Some auction databases index the artist under the inverted name "Chun Ouyang," a name-order variant of the same person rather than a different artist.

Ouyang Chun's market is small and the exact record-holding sale is not fully documented in public sources, so any comparison of his auction results to broader market trends should be treated with caution. There is no published catalogue raisonne, so provenance and authenticity generally run through his representing galleries, White Space in Beijing and, in the case of a 2019 solo show, ShanghART in Shanghai. Buyers researching past sales should also check listings under the inverted name "Chun Ouyang," which some auction databases use for the same artist.
