Paddy Bedford

Paddy Bedford was born around 1922 at Bedford Downs Station (Old Bedford Downs), in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, southeast of Warmun, also known as Turkey Creek. In Gija he was known as Nyunkuny and Goowoomji. He spent most of his life as a stockman and became a respected senior lawman before turning to painting formally in 1997, working with the newly formed Jirrawun Aboriginal Arts, and moving onto canvas in 1998.

His paintings, built from broad fields of ochre, black, and white, drew on his authority as a lawman and his deep, lived knowledge of Country. In 2006 he was one of eight Indigenous Australian artists commissioned to create a permanent work for the opening of the Musee du quai Branly in Paris. In late 2006, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney presented the first major solo exhibition of his work, a retrospective that toured to other Australian venues into 2007.

Bedford died on 14 July 2007 in Kununurra, East Kimberley, Western Australia. His work has continued to be shown posthumously, including Paddy Bedford: Ancestral Present at Ricco/Maresca Gallery in New York in 2022, his first solo exhibitions in the United States, presented in association with D'Lan Contemporary.

Bedford's late-career recognition was rapid and institutional rather than built through a long exhibition history. Auction house descriptions and museum programming have repeatedly framed him as central to the Indigenous Australian canon; Deutscher and Hackett, for instance, has described him as "one of Australia's most esteemed artists." That estimation was reinforced institutionally by his selection for the Musee du quai Branly commission and by the Museum of Contemporary Art's decision to give him, in 2006, the first major solo exhibition of his career.

The highest recorded auction price for a Bedford work is AUD 319,091, paid for Mendoowoorrji, Medicine Pocket (2005) at Deutscher and Hackett in Melbourne on 1 December 2022. That result surpassed an earlier benchmark set in the years after his death, when Joogoomoondiny, Gawler Gully (2004) sold for AUD 300,000 to a Swiss collector at Lawson~Menzies in Sydney, a price long cited as his auction record. His secondary market remains thin relative to blue-chip contemporary artists, and is closely tied to gallery-organized exhibitions and estate releases rather than a steady flow of resales.

His estate market is handled by multiple Australian galleries, including Cooee Art, Japingka Gallery, and Smith Davidson Gallery, with D'Lan Contemporary presenting significant estate works internationally, so provenance and verification generally trace back to these gallery and estate relationships and to Jirrawun Aboriginal Arts, his original dealer. Buyers should also take care with naming: market listings use both "Paddy Bedford" and the fuller "Paddy Nyunkuny Bedford," and neither should be confused with unrelated people of the same name, such as an Irish-born actor who died in 1999 or an unrelated Irish death notice from 2023.
