Why Pang Maokun matters
Pang Maokun is one of the most institutionally embedded painters in contemporary China, holding senior leadership roles including president of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute alongside a four-decade painting practice built on reworking Old Master and classical Chinese compositions with contemporary and ironic interventions. His combination of academic authority, sustained museum programming, and a 2024 to 2026 wave of gallery surveys spanning Beijing, Jakarta, New York, and France marks him as an artist whose institutional standing in China is now being matched by a widening international market presence.

Biography
Pang Maokun was born in 1963 in Chongqing, China. He trained entirely within the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute system, studying at its affiliated senior high school from 1978 to 1981, then in the Oil Painting Department from 1981 to 1988, where he earned a master's degree in oil painting in 1988. He gained early recognition while still a student, winning an Excellence Prize at the Sixth National Art Exhibition in Beijing in 1984 for the painting The Apples Are Ripe.
Over the following decades Pang built parallel careers as a painter and as an academic leader. He has held, or holds, a series of senior institutional positions, including president of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, chairman of the Chongqing Artists Association, director of the Chongqing Museum of Art, and vice chairman of the China Artists Association, alongside serving as a doctoral supervisor at his home institute.
His painting practice centers on recontextualizing familiar Western and Chinese pictorial traditions, inserting self-portraits, contemporary figures, and ironic details into compositions that echo historical masterpieces. This approach was the subject of the 2018 solo exhibition Attualita del passato in Florence, Italy, the 2020 survey Altered Carbon 2020: Pang Maokun at the Long Museum in Shanghai, and the large 2024 to 2025 retrospective-scale show The Scale of Classic at Tang Contemporary Art in Beijing, which brought together more than 80 works spanning over 40 years. As of mid-2026, available sources consistently describe him as living and working in Chongqing, with no obituary, death notice, or press report indicating otherwise.
Critical reception
Pang Maokun's practice has been framed around what one critical profile terms a form of pictorial anachronism: the deliberate collision of historical painting styles with contemporary and self-referential imagery. Institutional recognition has followed a steady arc, from prize-winning student work in the 1980s to a sequence of museum and gallery surveys, including the Long Museum's Altered Carbon 2020 and Tang Contemporary Art's 2024 to 2025 retrospective-scale presentation The Scale of Classic, curated as an eight-section survey of more than 80 works.
Market
Pang Maokun's gallery presence has expanded notably in 2026, with concurrent or sequential solo exhibitions at Baik Art in Jakarta, Crossing Art Gallery in New York, and a cluster of venues in the Dordogne region of France anchored by Galerie Marc Amanieux, in addition to a recurring pattern of solo exhibitions with Tang Contemporary Art across its Hong Kong, Beijing, Bangkok, Seoul, and Singapore spaces. No auction database, press release, or auction house record accessible in current research confirms a specific all-time auction high for the artist, meaning a verified auction record with work, price, house, and date cannot be published at this time.

What collectors should know
There is no confirmed catalogue raisonne for Pang Maokun, and public verification currently runs through his primary exhibiting gallery, Tang Contemporary Art, and exhibiting institutions rather than a formal authentication body. His auction footprint is not well documented in the sources available for this profile, so collectors should treat any claimed auction record for this artist with caution until it can be traced to a primary auction house result. His market signal instead comes primarily from institutional standing, which is unusually strong for a living Chinese painter, and from a 2026 expansion of gallery programming into Southeast Asia, the United States, and Europe.
