Paul Camenisch

Paul Camenisch was born on 7 November 1893 in Zurich, Switzerland. He studied architecture at ETH Zurich from 1912 to 1916 under Karl Moser, and no completed architecture degree is documented for him. He went on to work as a painter within the Swiss Expressionist milieu.

In the mid-1920s Camenisch co-founded the artists' group Rot-Blau with Albert Muller and Hermann Scherer, a circle central to Swiss Expressionism. After Muller and Scherer both died young, he helped form a second iteration, Rot-Blau II, with Hans Stocker, Otto Staiger, and others. In 1933 he was a co-founder of Gruppe 33, a Basel artists' association, and he served as its president from 1936 to 1952.

Solo exhibitions of his work followed at Galerie de Beaune in Paris in 1939 and at the Bundner Kunstmuseum in Chur in 1941.

Camenisch was also politically active in Basel. He was a convinced communist and a co-founder, in 1944, of the Party of Labour of Switzerland, which he represented for many years on the Basel City Council. He died in Basel in 1970.
