Paul Delvaux

Paul Delvaux was born on 23 September 1897 in Antheit, in the municipality of Wanze, Belgium. He studied Classics, Greek and Latin, at the Athenee de Saint-Gilles in Brussels from 1910 to 1916. His parents initially pushed him toward a practical career, and he enrolled in architecture at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1916, but he failed his mathematics examination and left the program after a year.

Delvaux returned to the Academie to study painting, working under the decorative painter Constant Montald and later Jean Delville, while completing military service in the early 1920s. He is generally described as having graduated from the Academie around age twenty-seven, roughly 1924. His early work moved through Impressionist and Expressionist influences before he arrived at the elaborate, theatrical, dreamlike style, populated by nudes, skeletons, trains, and classical architecture, for which he became known internationally.

Delvaux's fascination with trains ran through both his life and his art, feeding the railway imagery that recurs across his paintings. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium in 1958. He died on 20 July 1994 in Veurne, Belgium, and was buried there beside his wife.
