Paul Gabriel

Paul Gabriel was born on 5 July 1828 in Amsterdam, the son of the sculptor and painter Paul Joseph Gabriel. He trained at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam from 1840 to 1843 under Louis Zocher, then continued his education at Barend Cornelis Koekkoek's drawing academy in Cleves, Germany, and later studied with the painter Cornelis Lieste in Haarlem.

Gabriel became known for his depictions of the Dutch polder, the flat, reclaimed farmland crossed by canals and dotted with grazing cattle, rendered with close attention to changing light and weather. He is described by dealers and museums as one of the defining painters of Dutch polder landscapes and a central figure of the Hague School. He eventually settled in Scheveningen, the coastal district of The Hague, where he lived and worked for much of his later career.

Paul Gabriel died on 23 August 1903 at his home in Scheveningen, at the age of 75. His work entered Dutch museum collections both during his lifetime and after his death, and he remains represented today primarily through those institutional holdings and through the secondary auction market rather than through any dedicated gallery or estate program.
