Artist

Paul Pfeiffer

American, b. 1966

Video · Photography · Sculpture · Installation

Paul Pfeiffer works at the intersection of contemporary art and mass media, digitally manipulating footage of sports broadcasts, concerts, and other spectacles to isolate the choreography of crowds and bodies from the events themselves. He was the inaugural recipient of the Whitney Museum's Bucksbaum Award in 2000, has been included in the Venice Biennale, and is represented by four internationally recognized galleries, Paula Cooper Gallery, carlier | gebauer, Perrotin, and Thomas Dane Gallery. For collectors, he is a case study in an artist whose institutional standing is well ahead of a thin and only lightly tested auction market.

Paul Pfeiffer was born in 1966 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and spent part of his early life in the Philippines, a formative geography he later revisited on a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship in 1994 to 1995. He earned a BFA in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1987 and an MFA from Hunter College in 1994, and completed the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program in 1997 to 1998.

Pfeiffer's practice centers on video, photography, sculpture, and installation, most often built from footage of televised sports, awards shows, and religious or civic spectacles that he digitally alters, looping and erasing figures to expose the underlying structure of mass-media images. His 2000 inclusion in the Whitney Biennial coincided with his selection as the inaugural recipient of the Bucksbaum Award, created to recognize a living American artist demonstrating a singular combination of talent and imagination. He represented in the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001, and a traveling retrospective organized jointly by the MIT List Visual Arts Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago followed in 2003.

His work has since been the subject of major solo presentations at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin (2009) and a retrospective at Sammlung Goetz in Munich (2011), the same year he held a fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin. In 2025 and 2026, a traveling survey titled Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom moved through the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Guggenheim Bilbao. In 2026, he was named the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, a residency running into 2027. He lives and works in New York.

Pfeiffer's critical standing rests heavily on early and sustained institutional endorsement: the Whitney's decision to make him the first Bucksbaum Award winner in 2000, his inclusion the following year in the Venice Biennale, and a string of European museum surveys at Hamburger Bahnhof and Sammlung Goetz through the 2000s and into the 2010s. Writing referenced on the Whitney Museum's own artist page describes him, through critic Gregory Volk, as an artist who "excels at recasting well-known athletic and entertainment events with surprising open-ended nuances," a formulation that captures the throughline critics return to: Pfeiffer treats the spectacle of mass media, rather than a painted or sculpted image, as his raw material. That reading has held steady across two and a half decades of exhibitions, from his early basketball-footage works to his recent traveling survey.

Pfeiffer's secondary market is small and infrequent, consistent with a practice built on small-edition video, photography, and sculpture rather than unique paintings. The highest confirmed auction price for his work is USD 15,480, paid for Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (27) at Phillips in New York on 6 March 2024. Beyond that result, public auction data for Pfeiffer remains sparse, and his valuation is driven far more by museum exhibition history and gallery placement than by a deep or liquid resale record.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No catalogue raisonne has been published. Pfeiffer works primarily in small editions of video, photography, and sculpture, and authentication and provenance run through his representing galleries, principally Paula Cooper Gallery.

Pfeiffer's market signal comes overwhelmingly from institutions rather than the salesroom: museum retrospectives, biennial inclusion, and a continuous run of blue-chip gallery representation, rather than a deep history of high-value auction sales. There is no catalogue raisonne, so provenance and authentication for his editioned video, photographic, and sculptural works should be confirmed through his representing galleries. Because so few of his works have traded publicly, any single auction result, including his current record, should be treated as a data point rather than a stable benchmark for the value of a given work.
