Artist

Paul Rebeyrolle

French, 1926 to 2005

Painting · Lithography · Sculpture

Paul Rebeyrolle was one of the significant French painters of the second half of the twentieth century, a figure whose socially and politically engaged, thickly worked figuration set him apart from the dominant abstract and conceptual currents of his time. He represented France at the Venice Biennale, showed at documenta II and the Sao Paulo Biennial, and won the top prize at the Biennale de Paris in 1959. For a collector, he is a useful case study in the gap that can open between deep institutional standing, including a museum dedicated solely to his work, and a comparatively thin, specialist auction market.

Paul Rebeyrolle was born on 3 November 1926 in Eymoutiers, in the Haute-Vienne region of the Limousin. He completed his secondary studies at the Lycee Gay-Lussac in Limoges, earning a baccalaureat in philosophy in 1944, and did not pursue a formal degree at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. After moving to Paris in 1944 he studied informally at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere rather than in a degree-granting academy.

He first exhibited at the Salon des Independants in Paris in 1948. Early recognition followed quickly: the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in 1950 and the Prix Feneon in 1951. Through the 1950s his work was shown internationally, including the Venice Biennale in 1952, the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1957, and documenta II in Kassel in 1958. In 1959 he won the top prize at the Biennale de Paris for his monumental work Planchemouton. Major retrospectives followed at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1979 and the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in 2000. Contemporary press described him as a central figure of a politically engaged contemporary art.

Rebeyrolle died on 7 February 2005 at his home in Boudreville, in the Cote-d'Or region of Burgundy, at the age of 78. In 1995, ten years before his death, a dedicated museum, the Espace Paul Rebeyrolle, opened in Eymoutiers near his birthplace; it now holds a permanent collection of more than 80 works spanning 1948 to 2005 and remains the primary institutional custodian of his estate.

At his death, French art press placed Rebeyrolle among the major French artists of the twentieth century. Le Monde's obituary framed him as a history painter whose commitments stood apart from the dominant currents of his era, and Le Journal des Arts described him as a major figure of a politically engaged contemporary art. His inclusion in the Venice Biennale, documenta II, and the Sao Paulo Biennial through the 1950s, followed by retrospectives at the Grand Palais in 1979 and the Fondation Maeght in 2000, mark a critical trajectory built on institutional recognition in France more than on international market visibility. No named critic's exact wording could be confirmed from the available sources for reproduction here, so this section relies on paraphrase rather than direct quotation.

Rebeyrolle's auction market is thin and largely concentrated among French dealers and regional salesrooms rather than the major international houses. Specialist French valuation sites place the top range of his paintings at roughly EUR 75,000 to 80,000, but no single lot at that level, with a confirmed auction house, location, and sale date, could be verified against a primary auction database as of this writing. Among fully documented results, a painting titled Nu sur un lit, an oil on canvas measuring 114 by 146.5 centimeters, sold at EUR 14,000 against an estimate of EUR 15,000 to 20,000, and a 1964 work titled Paysage carried an estimate of EUR 10,000 to 15,000 at a 2023 Sotheby's Paris sale. Collectors should treat any single reported price as indicative rather than as an established benchmark.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne has been identified in public sources. The estate's reference point is the permanent collection at Espace Paul Rebeyrolle in Eymoutiers, which holds more than 80 works spanning 1948 to 2005.

Primary reference: https://espace-rebeyrolle.com/presentation-en/

There is no confirmed catalogue raisonne for Rebeyrolle, and his estate's authentication anchor is the permanent collection at the Espace Paul Rebeyrolle in Eymoutiers rather than a published scholarly catalogue. No single gallery holds documented exclusive representation of the estate today. Historically his work was shown at Galerie Drouant-David in Paris from 1951 and at the Marlborough galleries in London and New York between 1954 and 1964. Given the small number of fully documented auction results and the absence of a definitive top price in major databases, collectors should verify provenance directly with the estate or a specialist dealer before relying on any published price range.
