Why Peter Dreher matters
Peter Dreher is best known for one of the most sustained acts of repetition in postwar painting: Tag um Tag guter Tag (Day by Day, Good Day), a project begun in 1974 in which he painted the same water glass, set in the same spot in his studio and lit by the same north light, over and over, almost daily, for the rest of his life. The result is a body of several thousand small, numbered canvases that has made him a reference point in discussions of seriality, perception, and time in painting, and a name that continues to draw active gallery programming and museum interest years after his death.

Biography
Peter Dreher was born on 26 August 1932 in Mannheim, Germany. From 1950 to 1956 he studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe under Karl Hubbuch, Wilhelm Schnarrenberger, and Erich Heckel. He went on to teach painting, becoming an influential figure for younger German artists working in observational and realist modes.
In 1974 Dreher began Tag um Tag guter Tag, returning again and again to the same simple drinking glass, painted from direct observation on a fixed-size canvas. The series grew to several thousand individually numbered works over more than four decades and became the core of his critical identity, read variously as a meditation practice, a study of perception under near-identical conditions, and a quiet meditation on mortality and daily ritual. Alongside the glass paintings he also produced landscapes, portraits, and other still-life work.
His honors include the Rom-Preis at the Villa Massimo in Rome in 1965, the Reinhold-Schneider-Kulturpreis from the City of Freiburg in 1976, the Hans-Thoma-Preis of Baden-Württemberg in 1979, the Erich-Heckel-Preis in 1995, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2000. Dreher died on 18 February 2020 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, at age 87. German-language sources, an English-language art press obituary, and auction-house biographical records converge on this date and place. A minority of secondary sources instead cite 20 February 2020, or name Berlin rather than Freiburg im Breisgau as the place of death; the weight of specialist sources favors 18 February 2020 in Freiburg im Breisgau.
Critical reception
Dreher is generally discussed as a central figure in postwar German observational painting, with Tag um Tag guter Tag treated as his defining achievement. The project's comparison to On Kawara's daily practice was made explicit in a 2020 two-person presentation at Leo Koenig Inc. in New York, and museum surveys at institutions including the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain in Geneva (2011) and Milton Keynes Museum (2013) situated his repetition-based practice within broader international conversations about seriality and time in art. No exact, attributable verbatim quotation from a named critic in a major outlet could be confirmed in the available sources, so none is reproduced here.
Market
Dreher's auction footprint is modest relative to his institutional reputation. The highest recorded auction price identified for his work is USD 189,000, achieved at Christie's on 10 March 2022; the exact title of that work is not specified in the accessible sale record. Other documented results sit well below that figure, including a 2008 glass painting that brought CHF 58,860 at Koller Auktionen in Zurich and a grouped lot of three paintings that sold for roughly USD 21,000 at Bonhams. His market has continued posthumously through gallery programming rather than through a deep, liquid auction record: Meyer Riegger has mounted solo exhibitions in Karlsruhe and Berlin in 2025 and 2026, König Galerie maintains an active artist page and showroom presentations in Berlin, and Quint Gallery in La Jolla has continued a decades-long relationship with his work in the United States.

What collectors should know
There is no confirmed catalogue raisonne for Dreher's work; authentication and documentation run through the Stiftung Peter Dreher and his primary galleries, Meyer Riegger and König Galerie. His auction market is thin and results vary widely depending on the specific series and size of a given work, so a single high result, such as the USD 189,000 Christie's sale, should not be read as representative of typical prices. Collectors should also distinguish between the numbered Tag um Tag guter Tag glass paintings, which anchor his critical reputation, and his earlier landscape and figurative work, which trades in a different and generally lower price range.
