Peter Halley

Peter Halley was born on 24 September 1953 in New York City. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, then Yale University, where he earned a BA in art history in 1975. He enrolled in the MFA program at the University of New Orleans, received his degree in 1978, and remained in New Orleans until 1980 before returning to New York.

Through the 1980s Halley developed the geometric vocabulary that would define his work: abstracted "cells" and "prisons" connected by "conduits," rendered in synthetic, anti-naturalistic Day-Glo fluorescent paints and the stucco-like texture additive Roll-a-Tex. Institutional bios consistently describe the work as using the language of geometric abstraction to examine the organization of social space, and Halley became a central figure, alongside artists such as Ashley Bickerton and Philip Taaffe, in the movement later termed Neo-Geo. From 1996 to 2005 he founded and published Index Magazine, extending his role as a critical voice in contemporary art and culture. From 2002 to 2011 he served as director of the graduate painting program at the Yale School of Art.

Halley has continued to exhibit and produce new work into his seventies. He lives and works in New York and is married to the painter Ann Craven.
