Peter Howson

Peter Howson OBE was born on 27 March 1958 in London and moved with his family to Scotland at around age four, growing up near Prestwick, Ayrshire, and later in the Glasgow area. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1975 to 1977, then returned to complete his studies, graduating in 1981 (some sources describe this second period as work toward a master's degree, though the exact qualification is not consistently documented across sources). He emerged in the 1980s as part of a generation of Glasgow based figurative painters known for muscular, working class subjects rendered with a raw, expressionist intensity.

In 1993, Howson was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum as Britain's official war artist covering the conflict in Bosnia, a role that produced some of his best known and most widely exhibited paintings. He later worked as a war painter covering the Kosovo conflict for The Times. Howson has spoken and written about long term struggles with depression, alcohol and drug addiction, and a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome; during a period of treatment around 2000 he became a born again Christian, a conversion that reshaped much of his later religious and redemptive imagery. He has also described, on his own website, a serious mental health crisis and hospitalization in 2012, after which he returned to painting. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2009 and holds an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Strathclyde, awarded in 1996.
