Philip Sadee

Philip Lodewijk Jacob Frederik Sadee was born on 7 February 1837 in The Hague, Netherlands. He began drawing lessons around age ten under Paul Tetar van Elven, and at fourteen was placed in the studio of the history painter J.E.J. van den Berg, where he trained for about five years while also studying at the Haagsche Teekenacademie, the Hague drawing academy. In the mid-1860s he traveled to Dusseldorf with fellow painter Julius van de Sande Bakhuyzen to study at the Dusseldorf Academy under Albert Kindler; sources disagree on the exact span, with some placing his time there as early as 1865 and others extending it to 1868.

Sadee began as a painter of biblical scenes and history subjects, then turned to the everyday life that would define his career: fishermen, market women, and beach scenes around Scheveningen, rendered in bright color and finished brushwork. He exhibited continuously in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague from 1853 to 1903, was elected a member of the artists' society Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, and was a regular exhibitor at Pulchri Studio in The Hague, the club at the center of Hague School activity. Later in his career he also held a senior teaching post at the Hague drawing academy. He died on 14 December 1904 in The Hague, at age 67.

Sadee has been treated by dealers chiefly as a solid, representative figure of the Hague School's genre wing, valued for his depictions of coastal labor and everyday Dutch life rather than for stylistic innovation. He remained a steady presence in the group exhibitions of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Pulchri Studio in The Hague throughout his career.
