Pierre Hubert Subleyras

Pierre Hubert Subleyras was born on 25 November 1699 in Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, France. He trained first with his father, Mathieu Subleyras, and from 1717 in the Toulouse workshop of the painter Rivalz, before continuing his training at the Academie Royale in Paris. In 1727 he won the Prix de Rome from the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, a competition that funded a scholarship for study in Rome. He left France and settled there permanently in 1728. In Rome his painting Christ's Visit to the House of Simon the Pharisee earned him admission to the Accademia di San Luca, the city's artists' guild, cementing his place in the Roman academic milieu.

He went on to paint a range of subjects, but became most highly regarded for religious commissions and portraiture produced in Rome. His best known painting, The Mass of Saint Basil, was completed for St. Peter's Basilica and unveiled to acclaim in 1748; it was later moved to the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome, where it remains. Subleyras died in Rome on 28 May 1749, at age 49.

Art historians describe Subleyras as most highly regarded for religious pictures that are more serious in spirit than typical French painting of the Rococo period, and as a skilled portraitist within that same body of work. For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries he was regarded by reference sources as a relatively underrated figure, until a major exhibition of his work in Paris and Rome in 1987 helped reestablish his standing as one of the outstanding French painters of his period.
