Pierre Tetar van Elven

Pierre Tetar van Elven, born Peter Henricus Theodorus Tetar Elven on 30 August 1828 in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, near Brussels, was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, etcher, watercolorist, and panorama painter. He was the son and student of the painter Jean-Baptiste Tetar van Elven and the nephew of Paul Tetar van Elven, whose former home in Delft is now the Museum Paul Tetar van Elven. He began his formal training at the Academy of Fine Art in Amsterdam before moving to the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague; exact years of study are not documented in available sources.

Tetar van Elven specialized in architectural cityscapes, or vedute, working extensively in Italy alongside Dutch subjects. In 1861 he was appointed court painter to Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy.
