Painting

Pietro Bellotti

Pietro Bellotti was a Venetian Baroque specialist in "heads of characters," painting beggars, philosophers, and other figure studies in a naturalistic register close to Caravaggio and Moroni. His market is small and thinly traded, but his critical standing has risen sharply in recent years, culminating in a dedicated exhibition at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. For collectors, he is a case study in a rediscovered Old Master name where institutional attention is outpacing auction volume.

Pietro Bellotti was born in Volciano di Salo, in the province of Brescia near Lake Garda, in 1625 or 1627; sources disagree, with the tradition traced to the early biographer Orlandi giving 1625 and other references such as Capitolium Art giving 1627. He trained in Venice as a pupil of the painter Girolamo Forabosco. No record survives of a formal academy, school, or dated course of study; his education was an artisan apprenticeship typical of the period.

Bellotti built a career painting portraits and character heads, an approach that brought him into contact with major patrons, reportedly including Cardinal Mazzarino, Cardinal Ottoboni (later Pope Alexander VIII), and the elector of Bavaria. In Mantua he is said to have served as a kind of superintendent of the Gonzaga family's city and villa picture galleries. Late in life he returned to the Lake Garda region and died in poverty in Gargnano in 1700; no exact day or month of death has survived in the record.

Bellotti should not be confused with a later, unrelated painter of the same name, a Venetian vedute painter born in 1725, sometimes described as a nephew of Canaletto, who worked mainly in France and England and died before 1805. The two are frequently conflated in market listings and museum indexes, and this profile concerns only the 1625/1627 to 1700 Baroque painter.

Bellotti's critical reputation has been rebuilt largely through recent institutional attention. The Gallerie dell'Accademia's 2025 to 2026 exhibition, reviewed in Apollo Magazine, presents his beggars, philosophers, and character heads as serious naturalistic studies in a style close to Caravaggio and Moroni, rather than as incidental genre painting. The National Gallery in London and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford both hold and display his work as part of the broader 17th-century Venetian narrative. The critical arc runs from a painter largely forgotten after his death in obscurity in 1700 to a figure now treated as a meaningful link between Caravaggesque realism and later Venetian portraiture.

Bellotti's auction market is small and infrequent. The best-documented public result is a painting sold at Dorotheum in Vienna on 17 October 2017 for EUR 50,000 (about USD 57,000). Other public sales are tracked by specialist Old Master dealers such as Capitolium Art, though confirmed prices, titles, and dates for those additional lots are not available in the sources reviewed here. Some aggregator databases show a higher indicative price ceiling, but without a confirmed work title, sale date, or auction house attached, and given the risk of conflation with the later, unrelated Pietro Bellotti, that figure is not treated here as a verified auction record.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No catalogue raisonne exists for Pietro Bellotti and there is no estate or certificate-of-authenticity program. Attribution rests on connoisseurship, provenance, and the exhibition record built up by Venetian institutions, most recently the Gallerie dell'Accademia.

Bellotti's auction supply is very thin, so the small number of public sales, most notably the EUR 50,000 Dorotheum result in 2017, should be treated as data points rather than a stable pricing curve. There is no catalogue raisonne and no estate, so attribution depends on connoisseurship, provenance, and the exhibition history now being assembled by the Gallerie dell'Accademia and other Venetian institutions. Because a different, later painter also named Pietro Bellotti worked in France and England in the 18th century, collectors should confirm which artist a given work or listing actually refers to before relying on any auction comparison.
