Pietro Gualdi

Pietro Gualdi, also recorded as Pedro Gualdi in Spanish-language and Mexican market contexts, was born on 22 July 1808 in Carpi, in the Duchy of Modena, in present-day Italy. Around 1834 to 1835 he studied perspective, painting, and theater or scenographic design at the Academy of Arts in Milan. No formal degree or diploma from that period is documented.

In 1850 he was named professor of perspective at the Academia de San Carlos, then Mexico's leading academy of art, a post he held until around 1851.

By 1851 Gualdi had relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he worked as both an architect and an artist. He died there of malaria on 4 January 1857.
