Portia Zvavahera

Portia Zvavahera was born in 1985 in Zimbabwe; most institutional biographies, including those of David Zwirner, Sotheby's, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, give her birthplace as Harare, though Zeitz MOCAA's biography names Juru instead. She trained at the BAT Visual Arts Studio at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare, around 2003 to 2004, and went on to complete a diploma in visual arts at Harare Polytechnic in 2006, a qualification she has confirmed in her own interviews.

Her paintings draw on dreams, on the Apostolic religious visions she grew up around, and on textile and needlework traditions passed down through her family, built up through layers of printmaking, dye, and oil paint on canvas. She represented Zimbabwe at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 with the Zimbabwe Pavilion exhibition Dudziro: Interrogating the Visions of Religious Beliefs, curated by Raphael Chikukwa. That same period brought the Tollman Award for Visual Arts in 2013 and the FNB Art Prize at the Joburg Art Fair in 2014. She built her gallery career through Stevenson in Cape Town and Johannesburg, where she has held solo exhibitions across 2014 to 2023, and is now also represented internationally by David Zwirner. She continues to live and work in Harare.

Critical writing on Zvavahera consistently returns to the tension in her work between the real and the imagined. ArtReview has framed her paintings around what it calls hushed nightmares and pictorial tension. The rapid sequence of institutional recognition, her 2013 Venice Biennale pavilion, inclusion in the 2018 to 2019 Zeitz MOCAA survey Five Bhobh, and solo exhibitions opening in 2025 and 2026 at the Fridericianum, the ICA Boston, WIELS, and the Norval Foundation, signals a broad critical and curatorial convergence on her as a leading figure among painters using personal and spiritual imagery to speak to wider social and religious life in Zimbabwe.

Zvavahera's clearest, fully documented auction result remains a 2020 sale at Phillips London: Arising from the Unknown (2019) sold for GBP 163,800 (about USD 212,383) on 20 October 2020, a price reported at the time as a new auction record for the artist. Multiple aggregated auction-price sources (Aspire Art, MutualArt) now report a higher, 2023 New York sale of the painting Vese Vakanddibata (They all gave me strength) for USD 355,600, which would supersede the 2020 figure, though the auction house and exact sale date for that transaction are not disclosed in the sources available. A single secondary source, an exhibition-related social media post, further claims a 2024 Christie's London sale of The Woven Warped Garden of Ponder for USD 1,986,196; this figure is not corroborated by a primary auction-house record or a second independent source, so it is noted here only as an unverified report and is not treated as the artist's confirmed auction high.
