Qian Weicheng

Qian Weicheng (錢維城, 钱维城) was born in 1720 in Changzhou, Jiangsu, and died in 1772. No source consulted gives an exact birth or death date beyond the years. He followed the classical path of a Qing scholar official, placing first in the imperial civil service examinations in 1745, a distinction (zhuangyuan status) roughly equivalent to the top academic honor of his era.

Alongside his official career, Qian trained as a painter under the court artist Dong Bangda and entered the Southern Studio at the Qing court, an elite setting where painters and scholar officials worked in close proximity to the emperor. He went on to serve at the Imperial Court for more than twenty years, producing more than 275 paintings for the Qianlong Emperor and rising to the rank of vice president of the Board of Works. His paintings looked back to the Four Yuan Masters and, within his own century, to the tradition of the Four Wangs, placing him among the leading landscapists and flower painters of the Orthodox School. The Qianlong Emperor continued to add appreciative inscriptions to Qian's paintings even after his death in 1772.

Qian Weicheng's standing rests less on modern critical writing, which is scarce, than on the consistent judgment of major museums and auction houses that place him among the leading Orthodox School painters of the eighteenth century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes him as one of the foremost Orthodox School landscapists and flower painters of his century, and museum sources record that the Qianlong Emperor himself regarded him as one of the outstanding painters of the age. That imperial regard, reinforced by two decades of court service and hundreds of commissioned paintings, is the primary evidence of his historical reputation, since no exact, attributable critical quotations from named modern critics were located in the sources reviewed.

Qian Weicheng's market is that of a historical Qing court painter rather than a contemporary artist, and the publicly available data on realized prices is notably thin. Per market data compiled by HENI, his work has generated roughly USD 64.5 million in cumulative auction sales over the trailing 21 years, indicating an active if specialized collecting base for classical Chinese painting.

The clearest documented realized sale located is a modest USD 2,375 result at Heritage Auctions on 10 December 2024 for a work catalogued as attributed to Qian Weicheng. Separately, a classical handscroll titled Landscape after the Four Yuan Masters has carried a Hong Kong sale estimate of roughly HKD 8 million to 10 million, and Sotheby's has separately stated that it holds a world auction record for the artist without publishing a specific price.
