Rafa Macarron

Rafa Macarron was born in 1981 in Madrid, Spain, where he still lives and works. He did not train formally as an artist. As a young man preparing for college he considered applying to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid's leading fine arts academy, but the Spanish painter Juan Barjola advised him not to, and he followed that advice. He instead trained as a physiotherapist, a background he has said gave him a working knowledge of human anatomy that shows up directly in his paintings, and competed for a period as a road cyclist before turning to painting professionally around age twenty five, roughly 2006.

His anatomical training informs the visual language he is best known for: heavily distorted, elongated figures built up through gesture and color. In a 2021 interview with StreetArtNews, he said his physiotherapy training helped him understand human anatomy in depth, and that his years as a competitive cyclist gave him a sense of solitude and exposure to landscapes that also fed into his painting. He won the BMW Painting Prize in 2010 (the award is sometimes dated 2011) and was named Best Artist at ARCO Madrid in 2013, milestones that moved him from a regional to a national profile.

His exhibition history has since expanded internationally, with a planned Los Angeles show announced through Nino Mier Gallery, past shows at Allouche Gallery in New York, and institutional exposure in Spain including a 2021 solo exhibition at CAC Malaga and a solo focus at the La Nave Salinas Foundation in Ibiza, where he was reportedly the first Spanish artist given that treatment. In March 2026, Galeria Cayon in Madrid opened Introspective, a solo exhibition running through May 2026.
