Ralph Goings

Ralph Ladell Goings was born on May 9, 1928, in Corning, California. After military service, he studied art at Hartnell College in Salinas before earning a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1953. He later returned to school and received an MFA in painting from Sacramento State College in 1965.

Goings began painting the subjects that would define his career, diners, pickup trucks, and roadside Americana, in the late 1960s, and had his first solo exhibition in 1970. He was included in the landmark international survey documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 and in the Serpentine Gallery's Photo-Realism exhibition in London in 1973, both of which helped establish Photorealism as a recognized movement. Over the following decades his work shifted increasingly toward tightly cropped still lifes of condiment bottles and diner tabletops, a subject he continued to paint for the rest of his career.

Ralph Goings died on September 4, 2016, in Sacramento, California, of natural causes, at the age of 88.
