Artist

Rashid Rana

Pakistani, b. 1968

Photography · Digital print · Collage · Installation · Sculpture

Rashid Rana is the artist most associated with the rise of new media and digital photomontage practice in South Asia, best known for building large images out of thousands of smaller photographic tiles that reveal a second, often contradictory picture on close inspection. He is also one of the few Pakistani artists with a sustained international auction and museum record, holding a place in the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Fukuoka Art Museum, and the Saatchi Collection. For a collector, he represents an entry point into museum-anchored contemporary art from Pakistan, with a market that remains comparatively thin and concentrated around a small number of headline results.

Rashid Rana was born in 1968 in Lahore, Pakistan. He trained as a painter at the National College of Arts in Lahore, earning a BFA in 1992, then completed an MFA at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1994. His practice moved from painting into photography, digital print, collage, installation, and sculpture, and he became known for a signature photo-mosaic technique in which a large image, viewed from a distance, dissolves on approach into a grid of hundreds or thousands of smaller, often unrelated photographs. The Veil series (2004) and the Red Carpet series, which builds ornate carpet patterns from close-up photographs of a slaughterhouse floor, are his most widely cited bodies of work, both using the tension between the whole and its parts to probe stereotypes, consumer culture, and the divide between East and West.

Rana has held academic roles alongside his studio practice. He is a founding faculty member and current Dean of the School of Visual Arts and Design at Beaconhouse National University in Lahore, and recent institutional materials from 2026 also describe him as a UNESCO Chairholder in that role. He served as the founding artistic director for the inaugural Lahore Biennale before withdrawing from the position ahead of its opening, a development reported by Artforum. As of mid-2026 he continues to live and work in Lahore, where he remains active as both artist and educator; a 2025 work, Fractured Moment, was shown to acclaim at Art Basel Doha in 2026.

Rana is consistently framed by galleries, museums, and critics as a pioneering figure in South Asian new media and photo-based art, valued for a conceptual approach that uses the mechanics of the image itself, tiling, pixelation, and repetition, to carry social and political content. Chemould Prescott Road describes him as the first living artist to receive a survey solo exhibition at the Musee Guimet in Paris (2010), and his work has since appeared at the Whitechapel Gallery and Saatchi Gallery in London, Cornerhouse in Manchester, the Mohatta Palace Museum in Karachi, and My East is Your West, a collateral event at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. The recurring critical theme is his use of the digital grid to hold two readings of an image at once, a distant, legible whole and a disruptive, often uncomfortable, close-up truth.

Rana's best-documented auction result is Red Carpet 1 (2007), which sold for USD 623,000 at Sotheby's New York, a sale widely described in the art press as the highest price paid at auction for a work by a Pakistani artist. The exact sale date is not documented in the sources reviewed. A later work from the same series, Red Carpet Series #1, sold from the Abraaj Collection at Bonhams London around 2018 for roughly GBP 200,000 (about USD 260,000), well below the Sotheby's result. Artprice and other auction trackers show on the order of 100 public lots for the artist, mostly photography and digital-print editions, which keeps his market comparatively small relative to his institutional profile.

Rana's market is anchored more by museum validation than by a deep auction history: his headline result has not been clearly surpassed in the public record available today, and total lot volume remains modest for an artist of his institutional standing. There is no known catalogue raisonne, so provenance and studio or gallery verification carry extra weight. Lisson Gallery is his most clearly confirmed current representation, alongside exhibiting relationships with Chemould Prescott Road and Leila Heller Gallery, giving collectors several primary-market access points, though a full current gallery roster is not independently confirmed. The comparatively small and geographically concentrated secondary market means individual results should be read with care rather than treated as a smooth trend line.
