Rebecca Ness

Rebecca Ness was born in 1992 in Salem, Massachusetts. As a child she attended the Acorn Gallery School of Art in Marblehead, Massachusetts, an after-school program in oil painting and life drawing that she continued through her college years, and which she has credited with shaping her early technical grounding. She went on to earn a BFA in Painting, with a minor in History of Art and Architecture, from Boston University in 2015, followed by an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale School of Art in 2019. She now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Ness paints in oil on linen or canvas, and in gouache on paper, building close, often cropped views of people and interiors that read as unconventional portraits, of individuals, domestic spaces, and everyday settings rather than formal sittings. Her work has been described by her galleries as an exploration of place and intimacy through representational painting. Since finishing at Yale in 2019, she has held solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, London, and Los Angeles, and by 2021 to 2022 had gallery relationships with Carl Kostyal, Nino Mier Gallery, Galerie Marguo, and Morgan Presents, followed by Jessica Silverman and Ben Brown Fine Arts.

Public critical writing on Ness is still limited relative to her institutional traction. Gallery texts consistently frame her as a painter of unconventional portraits of people and places, working in a representational, intimate register that draws on personal history and everyday domestic scenes. Her 2024 exhibition Portraits of Place at Jessica Silverman and her string of solo shows across New York, Paris, London, and Los Angeles since 2019 point to steadily rising curatorial interest, and her paintings have entered the collections of the High Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Moderna Museet, among others, a pace of institutional acquisition that is notable for an artist only a few years past her MFA.

Ness's documented auction record is Origins, which sold for HKD 2,016,000 (about USD 256,831) at Christie's Hong Kong on 27 May 2022. Her next-highest documented results are I See You, which sold for USD 252,000 at Phillips New York on 18 November 2021, and Pencil Flipper, which sold for GBP 119,700 at Phillips London on 14 October 2022. Her market remains small in volume and concentrated in Hong Kong, New York, and London sales, and most of her commercial activity runs through her representing galleries rather than the auction room.

Ness's auction history is short and thin, with a single six-figure high-water mark set in Hong Kong in 2022 and most other recorded results well below it, so any single sale should be read with caution rather than as a stable trend line. There is no catalogue raisonne, and because she is an active, living artist early in her career, authentication and provenance run through her network of representing galleries, currently Jessica Silverman, Morgan Presents, Galerie Marguo, and Ben Brown Fine Arts, rather than through a published scholarly record. The strongest signal in her favor is the breadth and speed of her museum collection placements; the caution is that her market is still primarily a primary-market, gallery-driven one, with auction data too sparse to support firm price benchmarks.
