Red Hong Yi

Hong Yi, who works under the name Red Hong Yi, was born in 1986 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on the island of Borneo, Malaysia. She began her tertiary education with a Foundation Studies year at Trinity College, University of Melbourne, in 2004, then completed a Bachelor of Planning and Design in 2007 and a Master of Architecture in 2010, both at the University of Melbourne. After graduating, she moved to Shanghai before returning to build her art practice in Malaysia.

She became known as the artist who "paints without a paintbrush," creating portraits and installations from materials such as eggshells, teabags, soil, socks, matchsticks, copper plates, and basketballs rather than conventional paint. An early breakthrough was a large portrait of basketball star Yao Ming assembled from basketballs and red paint in Shanghai in 2012. Her practice regularly engages themes of women, heritage, race, and climate.

She now leads a small team of artists and designers at her own studio, Studio Red, in Kuala Lumpur. In 2026 she staged a solo exhibition, "I'm a Mum?!," exploring early motherhood, memory, and love, shown at Cultprint in George Town, Penang, from 10 May to 12 July 2026.
