René Paresce

Renato Herbert Paresce, who worked professionally as René Paresce, was born on 5 January 1886 in Carouge, Switzerland. He completed his secondary studies at the Istituto tecnico industriale Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, then spent a year in the physics faculty at the University of Bologna before transferring to the University of Palermo, where he earned a Laurea in Physics in 1911 with a thesis on the influence of electrons on the spectrum. He declined an offer of a university assistant post in Palermo and instead returned to Florence to teach natural sciences at the Collegio Alla Querce.

Paresce later settled in Paris, where he worked as a correspondent and art critic for Italian newspapers including Il Giornale d'Italia and La Stampa while developing his own painting, which he pursued without formal art school training. He became associated with the Italiens de Paris circle through group exhibitions in Paris during the 1920s, and he took part in Novecento Italiano group exhibitions in Milan during the mid-1920s. His first solo exhibition took place in 1933 at the Galleria del Milione in Milan, a gallery central to Italian modernism of the period.

He died in Paris in 1937.
