Rene Rousseau-Decelle

Rene Rousseau-Decelle (sometimes recorded as Rene Achille Rousseau-Decelle) was a French painter active from the late nineteenth century until his death in 1964. Multiple art market and gallery sources place his birth in 1881; no source consulted gives an exact day and month. Richard Green Gallery states he was born in La Roche-sur-Yon, in the Vendee region of France, though this detail rests on a single dealer source.

He trained in Paris under academic painters. One gallery source names William Bouguereau, Gabriel Ferrier, Edouard Toudouze, and Marcel Baschet as his teachers; another names Bouguereau, Luc-Olivier Merson, Marcel Baschet, and Gabriel Ferrier, and adds that he studied at the Academie Julian and, from 1899, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The two teacher lists disagree on the fourth name, and neither the additional schooling claim nor the exact teacher roster is corroborated across sources. Richard Green's biography also credits him with being made a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1926, a detail likewise not corroborated by other sources consulted.

Rousseau-Decelle specialized in large, crowd-filled paintings of contemporary leisure and racing scenes, subjects such as the paddock and grandstand at Longchamp and Parisian parks, which he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon as well as at regional salons in La Roche-sur-Yon (the Salon Yonnais), Noirmoutier, Angers, and Fontenay-le-Comte. In later life he settled on the Vendee coast at Prefailles, where he painted seaside subjects and decorated the local chapel.
