Ricardo Canals

Ricard Canals Llambi was born in Barcelona on 13 December 1876. He began formal training in 1893 at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona but left after a short time, continuing his studies under the academy of Pedro Borrell del Caso and working alongside Isidre Nonell, with whom he was later associated in the Colla del Safra, or Saffron Group, known for its distinctive yellow-toned palette.

Canals exhibited early and internationally. In 1898 he and Nonell held a joint exhibition at the Galerie Le Barc de Boutteville in Paris. He showed at the Paris Salon in 1897, 1898, and 1906, and exhibited abroad as well, winning a second prize at the Exposition Universelle de Bruxelles (the exact year of that prize is not documented in available sources). His work later entered public museum collections in Belgium and Spain, including a museum in Ghent.

In Spain, he received the Second Mention Honorifica medal at the Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes in both 1908 and 1922, and in 1920 a Barcelona fine arts exhibition dedicated a special room to his work. Canals died in Barcelona on 7 February 1931.

Canals's contemporary reception centered on his place within Catalan modernisme and his close working relationship with Isidre Nonell, with whom he held a joint exhibition at the Galerie Le Barc de Boutteville in Paris in 1898. Institutional recognition followed through Spanish national medals in 1908 and 1922, marking him as an established figure within the Spanish art establishment of his era rather than a marginal one.
