Richard Hambleton

Richard Art Hambleton, sometimes catalogued in auction records as Richard A. Hambleton, was born on June 23, 1952, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He studied at the Vancouver School of Art, now Emily Carr University of Art and Design, earning an Advanced Diploma there in 1975.

He first drew attention with the "Mass Murder" series, staged crime scenes of red paint and chalk outlines that he installed in public spaces across North America in the late 1970s and early 1980s. By the early 1980s he had moved to New York and begun the "Shadowman" series, life-size black silhouette figures painted directly onto walls, doorways, and construction sites in Manhattan. His shadow-figure work was also associated with Berlin, including a triptych later created for the Mauermuseum at Checkpoint Charlie. He was included in the Venice Biennale in 1984. He also produced the "Horse and Rider" and "Image Mass Murder" bodies of work, and later shifted toward large-scale studio paintings, including waterscapes.

Hambleton's career declined through the late 1980s and 1990s, a period documented in the press as marked by drug addiction and periods of homelessness even as his early work remained influential. His profile was revived in 2009 with a Giorgio Armani-organized exhibition, "Richard Hambleton, New York," which opened in London and traveled to the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. A feature documentary on his life and work, "Shadowman," reportedly premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016. Hambleton died on October 29, 2017, of cancer, at the age of 65, in a Manhattan apartment, New York City.

Hambleton is now widely credited, alongside Basquiat and Haring, as a founding figure of street art who treated the anonymous public wall as a legitimate site for serious painting. Critical writing on his studio work has often framed his later large-scale paintings, including his waterscapes, within the tradition of heroic abstraction.
